A reading of Easton Pennsylvania’s history reveals a colorful past. During Prohibition, the city became known as the “Little Apple” because of its roaring nightlife, abundant liquor, and high-class brothels. After boxing fights at Madison Square Gardens, large crowds would take a 67 mile train ride to Easton to enjoy the vices that the town had to offer. Interestingly, this same town was known as the “City of Churches” because it claimed the highest church-to-population ratio in the nation.

After prohibition, the city quickly shed the seedy image and became a more urbane but friendly community that bustled with economic activity. Today, The Easton real estate market is popular with home buyers who want a high quality of life and and a good place to raise children. Community and civic leaders are resolute in their determination to maintain property value and to preserve the amenities and top-notch municipal services that residents enjoy.

Easton served as a significant military center during the Revolutionary War. In 1776, Easton was one of the first three places where the Declaration of Independence was read publicly. According to local lore, the Easton flag was flown during the reading, making it the first place where a “stars and stripes” flag was flown.

Easton became an economic powerhouse that followed the industrial boom that came during the railroad and canal era. Canals and railroads carried coal from the north and west, and iron works commerce was facilitated by this early infrastructure. At one time, the city was home to five railroads, and was a bastion of economic strength.

Today, the City of Easton Pennsylvania is pulsating with activity at weekly farmer’s markets, upscale eateries, and at world-class cultural centers like the State Theatre Center for the Arts. Easton home owners enjoy the finest entertainment venues and an exciting lifestyle.
